Heights members meet on Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. to distribute sandwiches and hot drink.  We call our ministry "The Highways" in an attempt to obey the words of Jesus in Matthew 22.  In Jesus's parable of the king who prepared a wedding feast, the invited guests were too busy to attend, so Jesus through the king said to His slaves, "The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.  'Go therefore to the main highways, and as many as you find there, invite to the wedding feast'" (Matthew 22:8-9).  We want to help as many as possible find Jesus, so we meet together, pray, then distribute sandwiches and a hot drink in the winter months to ease the discomfort of living on the streets.  In reality, this is a whole church project, since many members make sandwiches on Saturday evening after vespers, and others meet on Sunday morning to share them along with a hot drink.  In addition, several of our team members make burritos, which are very popular. Some have also brought fruit and coats.
The most common remark of our "highway" friends is, "God bless you."  These friends range in age from their seventies to young children with a parent.  Their stories, as to how they came to live on the streets, vary from illnesses to loss of jobs.  A recent young lady told of getting out of the U.S. Army with nothing else to do.  She lost her job selling magazines and wound up on the streets.
Our entire church is praying that our highway friends find a way off the streets and are better able to care for themselves. Pictured is a recent crew of "The Highways."
